75th anniversary of the founding of St. Joseph Hospital, Malpas, South Wales.
On the 11th February 2021 the Sisters of St. Joseph living at Llantarnam Abbey gathered to celebrate the Foundation of St. Joseph’s Hospital 75 years ago. A mass of thanksgiving was celebrated by the chaplain, Fr. Peter McLaren and a presentation of photographs was made to recall the milestones in the life of the Nursing Home, which in due course was designated as a Hospital.
Over the years the Sisters built a new Hospital which was upgraded when renovations were needed to keep it up to the required standards. At one point there was a Maternity Unit of 11 beds, which later became an inpatient Hospice. It was moving to recall the modest beginnings made in 1946 and to see the photo of the original Nursing Home, covered in snow.
After the celebration in the Abbey Sr. Bernadette Marie (former C.E.O of the Hospital ) went with Sr. Susan (The Provincial ) for a visit to the Hospital along with Srs. Punitha and Jessy. It was sad to see the old Nursing Home, latterly the convent, deserted. However looking in the other direction it was good to see the modern Hospital with further development taking place and many cars in the car park. So many memories were sparked and ignited; so many people and events were remembered.
SO, FOR ALL THAT HAS BEEN, THANKS. TO ALL THAT SHALL BE, YES. (DAG HAMMARSKJOLD)
